After researching ways to become more self-sufficient, I decided on trying a method called IBC Aquaponics utilizing fill and drain. The premise behind the idea is to have growbeds situated above a sump, which is fed by a 275 gallon tank containing fish (mine has catfish and bass). The fish fertilize the water, which in turn is pumped into the growbeds where it is cleaned by the plants, and then it drains into the sump. The water pump is on a 10 minutes per hour cycle, so the plants get a chance to get watered and then air for the roots. The growbeds are filled with pea gravel, and contain no soil.
